
BRT Animal Lovers Association Hosts Inaugural General Assembly

The BRT Animal Lovers Association recently held its 1st General Assembly at the Turkish Cypriot Journalists Association. During this assembly, Hüseyin Erkoç was appointed as the chairman of the council, with Serda Tüzel and Neslihan Soykan taking on roles as secretaries.
In his address, Erkoç emphasized the importance of the organization in preventing negative occurrences and protecting the animals under the care of BRT. He highlighted the responsibility of humans in respecting the right to life of animals and stressed the need for efforts to protect animal rights.
Following Erkoç’s speech, a video showcasing the beloved animal friends of BRT was presented. BRT Director Meryem Özkurt also spoke at the event, expressing the institution’s commitment to caring for animals and the significance of the sponsorship program by AsBank.
Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı expressed his satisfaction with the formation of the association, recognizing the dedication of animal lovers and the importance of organized efforts for the welfare of animals. He mentioned the necessity of building common shelters due to the increasing population of stray dogs in Nicosia.
Professor Doctor Füsun Yıldız presented an action plan aimed at promoting scheduled sterilization, education, and adoption of stray animals. She also advocated for the removal of animal feed from luxury consumption and the prompt legalization of a penal law to prevent animal cruelty.
Sibel Tatar, wife of President Ersin Tatar, praised the initiatives for stray animals and neutering projects in the region. She emphasized the need for collaboration on shelter, sterilization, and transportation of strays, calling for a unified effort to address the issue.
The General Assembly continued with the election of management, audit, and disciplinary boards. Various individuals were appointed to these positions, showcasing the collective commitment of the association to the well-being of animals. The event concluded with a message of gratitude to all supporters and a reaffirmation of the ongoing efforts to protect and care for animals in the region.
