BRTK Director Meryem Özkurt Sends Message for Press Day
Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation (BRTK) Director Meryem Özkurt has released a statement to commemorate the 11th of July Press Day.
In her message, Özkurt highlighted the important role BRTK has played in amplifying the voice of Turkish Cypriots to the international community for the past 60 years. She emphasized that through platforms like the Northern Cyprus Smart TV application, BRTK has joined private channels in promoting the TRNC globally, thereby showcasing the progress made by the media in Cyprus since the publication of the first Turkish newspaper.
According to Özkurt, BRTK has emerged as a pillar in the development of the media landscape. The organization not only provides resources for news and content production but also ensures the implementation of media regulations in practice.
Özkurt also addressed the challenges posed by the wide use of social media, particularly the spread of fake news and information manipulation. She stressed the importance of a responsible press in maintaining and advancing democratic order in nations.
As BRTK, Özkurt highlighted the organization’s commitment to operating in line with the principles of pluralism, tolerance, and broad-mindedness that are integral to a democratic society.
Finally, Özkurt extended her congratulations to BRTK employees and all press workers on the occasion of Press Day. It is a day to commemorate the publication of Saded, the first newspaper of the Turkish Cypriots.
