European Union Agrees to Provide Ukraine with Additional €50 Billion Aid Package
In a significant move, the European Union has reached an agreement to provide Ukraine with an additional €50 billion aid package from the EU budget. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, made the announcement on social media following a vote during the summit of the heads of state and government of the European Union Member States in Brussels.
“We have a deal. All 27 leaders agreed on an additional €50 billion support package for Ukraine within the EU budget. This locks in steadfast, long-term, predictable funding for Ukraine. EU is taking leadership & responsibility in support for Ukraine; we know what is needed,” wrote Michel in a tweet.
Unofficial sources suggest that the decision was made after an agreement on Hungarian conditions, under which the European Commission will have to review spending annually, and the report will be examined by the European Council. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also welcomed the announcement.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is expected to hold talks with his Swedish counterpart in Brussels. However, it is not expected to replace a meeting in Budapest, where Ulf Kristersson was previously invited by the Prime Minister. Discussions on Sweden’s NATO membership could only be meaningfully addressed during a visit to Budapest.
The developments have not been without controversy, with personal jibes directed at Viktor Orbán by certain leaders. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized Orbán for what he called “egoistic games.” However, despite reservations expressed by some leaders, the agreement reportedly contained the compromise tabled by Orbán.
In an interview before the vote, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo acknowledged the significance of Orbán’s position, expressing hope for a compromise. The move underscores the importance and sensitivity of decision-making within the European Union and its Member States.
