Buda Castle’s Phenomenal Renovation Unveiled Through Stunning Photos
Buda Castle in Budapest is currently undergoing a remarkable transformation as part of the ongoing renovation project. During the renovation works in the 1960s, the original interior and exterior decorations were removed, and significant changes were made to the building’s appearance. For instance, the entrance from Szent György Square was closed off, and the Northern building wing was extended with three additional window axes. Additionally, the Communist leadership of Hungary caused further damage to the interior.
The Buda Castle complex has also been home to several museums and libraries throughout history. The Museum of the Hungarian Workers’ Movement occupied building A from 1974 until the fall of the Central European Communist regimes in 1989-1990. Following this, the museum left the Buda Castle in 1997. Ludwig Museum later took its place but eventually relocated to the Müpa, the Budapest Palace of Arts, in 2005. Currently, Hungary’s Széchenyi Library occupies the main building of the castle.
The renovation of Buda Castle is part of the Nemzeti Hauszmann Program (National Hauszmann Program), which aims to restore the original buildings in the heart of Budapest, preserving their historical and architectural significance.
