Budapest Airport to Preserve Hungary’s Last Marsh

Budapest Airport takes action to save endangered wetland habitat

One of Budapest’s largest remaining wetlands, the Merzse marsh in district XVII, is in danger of drying out. To ensure the survival of this important habitat, the Municipality of Rákosmente has been implementing habitat reconstruction programs and water replenishment efforts. Last year, Budapest Airport stepped in to support the initiative with a donation of 10 million HUF towards the development of a rescue plan for the marsh.

The Merzse marsh is home to numerous protected animal and plant species, making it a vital ecosystem in Budapest. According to bud.hu, one-third of all European bird species, half of all bird species found in Hungary, and 75% of all bird species in Budapest can be found in this area.

To address the issue of drying out, the ditches leading to the marsh will be reconstructed to allow for better water replenishment. By making the ditches shallower and wider, water will flow over the barrier layer and into the marsh bed, creating suitable conditions for wildlife. This method not only helps save the Merzse marsh but also provides a long-term solution to droughts induced by climate change.

Katalin Valentínyi, the chief communication and government relations officer of Budapest Airport, highlighted the importance of supporting ecological issues like the preservation of wetland habitats. She emphasized the commitment of Budapest Airport to environmental conservation and the well-being of local communities.

The cooperation between Budapest Airport, Rákosmente, and the town of Ecser has been instrumental in completing the necessary permits for water replenishment to the Merzse marsh. The project aims to restore the habitat for aquatic amphibians, reptiles, and birds, as well as reintroduce fish species typical of the area.

With the preparatory surveys and environmental impact assessments completed, work on-site is set to begin soon. The winter of 2025-2026 has been chosen as the starting point for construction, as flora and fauna are less active during this time, providing both technical and conservation benefits.

The efforts to save the Merzse marsh and its wildlife are a testament to the dedication of all involved parties to preserve important ecological areas in Budapest. Through ongoing support and collaboration, the hope is that future generations will continue to enjoy the beauty and biodiversity of this unique wetland habitat.
