Budapest Introduces Festive Light Trams

Budapest Illuminated Streetcars and HÉV Train Ready to Bring Festive Spirit to the City

Just like last year, a vibrant fleet of streetcars and an illuminated HÉV train will be back to add a special touch to the festive season in Budapest. According to We Love Budapest, these decorated vehicles will set off from Hungária tram station on December 1 and will brighten up the streets of Budapest until January 7, 2024.

In addition to the illuminated streetcars, the more than 70-year-old HÉV train, which was renovated in 2019, will also be adorned with lights starting from December 1. This “light train” (FényHÉV) will operate in the early evening hours between Batthyány square and Szentendre at regular fares.

One special treat for passengers will be a visit from Santa Claus and his singing reindeer on December 6, when they will take a few rides on the H5 line, offering presents to children. Passengers can also learn about the history of HÉV trains during this festive journey. Tickets for the Santa Claus H5 line will cost HUF 3,000 (EUR 8) for all age groups.

It is worth noting that the first illuminated streetcars in Hungary ran in Budapest in 2009, and since then, they have become a popular tradition in many cities, including Szeged, Miskolc, and Debrecen. The success of these illuminated streetcars has prompted other cities to join the initiative, and similar services are now available in various cities from the beginning of December to the beginning of January each year.

The light displays on these public vehicles are sure to create a magical and festive atmosphere throughout Budapest, bringing joy to both locals and visitors during the holiday season.
