Budapest Plans New Trams and Waterfront Redevelopment along the Danube
The iconic 2 tram line in Budapest, which runs along the picturesque Pest Danube promenade, is undergoing a major transformation. The current Ganz trams that have been in operation since the 1970s will soon be replaced with modern CAF trams, providing passengers with enhanced comfort and convenience. The new trams feature low floors for easier access, air conditioning, and are larger and longer than the current vehicles.
According to reports from Nepszava, the new trams are expected to be 34 meters long and will start operating by the second half of 2026. This upgrade will require infrastructure modifications near the Pest end of the Chain Bridge underpass. These changes were initially part of the Chain Bridge’s renovation plans but were delayed due to funding issues.
In addition to the tram line upgrade, the Pest lower embankment is also undergoing revitalization efforts. City leaders aim to transform the riverside area into a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly space with green spaces and public amenities. The current redevelopment includes planting trees, installing misting systems, adding shaded areas, and introducing sun loungers, drinking fountains, and bike racks.
The lower embankment has become a popular area for pedestrians, cyclists, and non-motorized users, especially during weekends when the area is pedestrianized from Margaret Bridge to Irányi Street. This initiative has led to public enjoyment and the hosting of numerous events, attracting thousands of visitors.
Despite the positive reception to the pedestrianization of the lower embankment, there have been challenges regarding permanently closing it to cars. Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced plans to turn the area into a pedestrian-only zone in 2022, but faced opposition from pro-car advocates and concerns about potential traffic congestion. The city administration is taking a cautious approach, conducting detailed planning and consulting with stakeholders to address these issues.
The comprehensive redevelopment of the embankment is part of a larger EUR 300 billion development initiative for Budapest funded by the EU’s TOP Plusz program. This ambitious plan aims to improve public spaces and climate adaptation measures across the city, pending the arrival of necessary funds.
