Budapest Police Prohibit Demonstration for Public Safety

The Budapest police (BRFK) have made the decision to ban a planned demonstration in relation to the ongoing armed conflict between the Hamas terrorist organisation and Israel. The announcement was made on the BRFK’s website police.hu on Wednesday.

According to the statement, a private individual had submitted a request to hold the demonstration in Budapest’s 2nd district on 22 November. However, the BRFK pointed out that similar events in other parts of Europe and the world have led to violence, and they believe that such a demonstration in Hungary could potentially endanger public order and safety, as stated in the law on the right of assembly.

Furthermore, BRFK also emphasized that sanctions would be imposed on those who choose to attend the banned event.

This is not the first time that the Budapest police have intervened in such matters. In fact, several demonstrations have been banned by the authorities since the outbreak of the armed conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The decision by the Budapest police reflects the challenges faced by authorities in balancing the right to assembly with public safety concerns in the context of sensitive and contentious international issues.

It remains to be seen how the organizers and potential participants of the banned demonstration will react to the decision, and whether there will be further developments in this matter.
