Budapest Awarded EU Mission Label for Climate Neutrality
The city of Budapest has received the prestigious EU Mission Label from the European Commission, recognizing its comprehensive roadmap to achieve climate neutrality. This announcement was made by the mayor’s office on Wednesday.
In 2022, the municipality joined the EU’s Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities initiative, which operates under the Horizon Europe programme. The goal of this initiative is to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% and to neutralize the remaining 20%. The European Commission’s endorsement of Budapest’s action and investment plan for climate neutrality highlights the city’s commitment to combating climate change.
The award was presented to Budapest’s mayor, Gergely Karácsony, during the Cities Mission Conference held from May 6 to 8 in Vilnius. This recognition is expected to facilitate the acquisition of additional EU funding to support various climate protection projects throughout the city.
As Budapest moves forward with its climate initiatives, it sets a critical example for other cities aspiring to reach similar goals.
