Budapest’s Dark Past: A Photo Exhibition
The Hungarian Museum of Architecture and Monument Protection Documentation Center is marking the 80th anniversary of the Siege of Budapest during World War II with a photo exhibition showcasing the damage caused by the conflict.
The exhibition sheds light on the devastation that occurred during the siege, which lasted from December 25, 1944, to February 13, 1945. Budapest, once a vibrant city, became a battleground, resulting in significant destruction to both public buildings and residential areas. The Danube bridges were also destroyed, cutting off vital connections between Pest and Buda.
Photographs taken immediately after the siege provide a glimpse into the extent of the damage and the ongoing reconstruction efforts. The exhibition highlights the destruction of the built environment and offers insight into the challenges faced in rebuilding the city.
One of the most severely affected areas during the siege was the Buda Castle district, where entire streets were left uninhabitable, and many buildings were reduced to rubble. Despite the damage, the bombing uncovered valuable artifacts, some of which will be showcased in the exhibition titled “The Siege of Budapest.”
To create an authentic experience for visitors, the curators have integrated audiovisual material into the exhibition, including excerpts from siege diaries and film newsreels from the period.
The exhibition is being held at the Műhelytér of the Hungarian Museum of Architecture and Monument Protection Documentation Center from January 31 to March 30. This unique event provides a rare opportunity to witness the impact of war on a historic city and the resilience of its inhabitants in the face of adversity.
