Budapest’s Downtown Unveils Stunning New Christmas Fair and Ice Rink

Budapest Christmas fair and ice rink opened by mayor Gergely Karácsony
The Christmas fair and ice rink in Budapest were officially opened by Gergely Karácsony, the incumbent mayor of the city. It is quite a coincidence that “Karácsony” means Christmas in Hungarian, adding a light-hearted touch to the event. The fair and the ice rink are expected to attract both locals and tourists for a memorable holiday experience.
According to 24.hu, one of Budapest’s popular Christmas fairs opened on the Deák Ferenc Square in the city’s downtown. The venue, City Hall Park (Városháza Park), features a brand new ice rink and is also hosting the Christmas Shoebox Presents campaign organized by the Hungarians Baptist Aid. The initiative aims to gather gifts for children in need, with collection points spread across Hungary.
Speaking about the opening, Gregory Christmas, Budapest’s opposition mayor, expressed their desire to offer residents the experience of holiday preparations in the heart of the city. He emphasized the creation of the Christmas adventure park and the ice rink, and also announced decorative lighting as a response to the end of the energy crisis.
The ice rink will remain open until 7 January, with special events such as the Advent candle-lighting celebration on 3 December and a visit from Santa Claus on 6 December. In addition, traditional Hungarian chimney cakes will be available for visitors to enjoy at the park.
Furthermore, Tibor Hári, the CEO of the Hungarians Baptist Aid, shared that they are expecting Christmas shoebox presents until 18 December. The campaign, which collected over 60 thousand shoeboxes last year, is Hungary’s largest charity drive for the holiday season.
Last year, the Vörösmarty Square, home to Budapest’s world-famous Christmas Fair, saw a change in management from the municipal council to the Fidesz-led 5th district, as decided by the government. As a result, a new Christmas Fair was organized near the Vörösmarty Square, offering an alternative experience for visitors.
The opening of the Christmas fair and ice rink in Budapest adds more festive charm to the city and provides an opportunity for charitable giving during the holiday season.
