Budapest’s Iconic Tram Loses Title as World’s Longest After 8 Years

Budapest Loses Title of World’s Longest Tram After Eight Years

In a surprising turn of events, Budapest has lost its title as the home of the world’s longest tram after holding the record for eight years. The city’s fleet of trams on Line 1, which stretched an impressive 56 meters along the tracks, has been surpassed by new tram models introduced in Mannheim, Germany.

The record-breaking tram in Budapest was part of the CAF Urbos series, manufactured by the Spanish company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF). The nine-section tram, weighing 67 tons and capable of carrying up to 345 passengers, was a marvel of modern engineering. Its energy-efficient design even earned it the nickname “the Tesla of trams”.

However, the new record-holder is the Škoda ForCity Smart 38T, a 58.7-meter-long tram showcased by the Czech-based Škoda Group. This innovative tram, designed for the Rhein-Neckar region’s transit authority in Germany, features six sections and can accommodate up to 366 passengers. Its adjustable floor height makes boarding easy for passengers.

Despite losing the title of the world’s longest tram, Budapest still boasts the third-longest tram in the world: the Siemens Combino Supra, running on the city’s famous 4-6 tram line. This 54-meter-long tram operates 24/7, making it the most reliable mode of transportation in the city.

While Budapest may no longer have the longest tram in the world, its trams continue to be a symbol of innovation and efficiency in public transportation.
