Building Evacuated in Sakarya after 4-Story Fire

A building in the Serdivan district of Turkey caused fearful moments for its residents when it began to show signs of collapse. The 4-storey building in the 32 Evler Neighborhood on 825th Street started to come apart during a construction excavation nearby.

Citizens quickly alerted authorities and emergency response teams, including Serdivan Municipality, AFAD, Firefighters, Police, and Adapazari Gas Distribution (AGDAŞ), were dispatched to the scene to secure the area.

Upon initial inspections, it was discovered that the newly constructed building lacked a reception wall, which posed a risk of shifting and collapse for the 4-storey building and its 8 adjacent apartments. As a precaution, residents living in the building were evacuated at night and essential services such as electricity, water, and gas were cut off.

One resident, Ismail Uzun, recalled how the land beneath the building had started to slip after basic excavation work was carried out nearby, leading to the dangerous situation they now found themselves in. Another resident, Sevinç Çamlıbel, expressed frustration at the lack of warning about the potential risks during the construction process.

In response to the incident, Serdivan Municipality announced that temporary housing would be provided for the affected residents. Municipal officials assured that technical studies would be conducted promptly to address the issue and prevent similar risks in the future. The process will be closely monitored to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
