Bükk Region’s Caves Reach Global Recognition in Dune: Prophecy
The stunning cave dwellings of Bükkalja in northern Hungary have captured the attention of global audiences thanks to their appearance in the popular series “Dune: Prophecy.” The show, a prequel to the iconic “Dune” series, features these unique geological formations as the home of the Harkonnen family.
Starring Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson as Valya and Tula Harkonnen, the series showcases the southeastern border of Noszvaj, where the cave dwellings are located, known locally as “Pocem.” Set 10,000 years before the events of the original “Dune” series, “Dune: Prophecy” explores the origins of the Harkonnen sisters and the Bene Gesserit order.
In reality, the caves are part of the Gyulakeszi Rhyolite Tuff Formation, a volcanic rock formation dating back 19-20 million years. Designated as part of the UNESCO Global Geopark in 2024 and recognized as Hungarian Heritage since 2013, these caves hold rich cultural and geological significance.
The use of Noszvaj’s cave dwellings in “Dune: Prophecy” has drawn international attention to Hungary’s hidden gem, with many viewers expressing their desire to visit the country and witness the filming locations firsthand. As interest in the series grows, the Bükk region is poised to become a popular destination for cinematic tourism, blending natural beauty with Hollywood storytelling.
