Cargo Ship Sinks in Sea of Marmara
Rescue Efforts Underway for Cargo Ship Taking on Water in Sea of Marmara
The General Directorate of Coastal Safety (KEGM) has announced that rescue efforts are underway for a cargo ship that is taking on water in the Sea of Marmara. The 69-meter-long general cargo ship named “BATUHAN A” encountered trouble in the southwest of İmralı Island in the Marmara Sea, prompting immediate action from the KEGM.
KEGM-6 and KIYEM-4 fast rescue boats belonging to the General Directorate of Coastal Safety of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure were dispatched to the scene to aid in the rescue efforts for the ship and its 6-person crew.
Bursa Governor Mahmut Demirtaş confirmed that two teams from the General Directorate of Coastal Police, as well as a team from the Bandırma district of Balıkesir, have been deployed to the region to assist in the rescue efforts. The crew, believed to be Turkish citizens, is currently in need of assistance as the ship continues to take on water.
Governor Demirtaş revealed that the waves in the area where the ship sank have reached a height of nearly 3 meters, presenting challenging conditions for the rescue operation. The Coast Guard Command is coordinating the efforts from its campus in the Mudanya district, while the teams of the Coast Guard Command and the General Directorate of Coastal Police continue to work tirelessly in the region.
Efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the crew amidst the challenging conditions in the Sea of Marmara.
