Çavuşoğlu Releases Statement on Sudan Attack, Embassy Relocating

The vehicle of Turkey’s Ambassador to Sudan, İsmail Çobanoğlu, was shot at in Khartoum. The embassy vehicle suffered damages during the attack. The attack was carried out in an area where clashes have been ongoing between the army and rapid support forces. The motive and the group behind the attack remain unknown.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu spoke about the situation in Sudan and the attack on the embassy vehicle. He explained that the clashes between the army and rapid support forces were taking place in the middle of the city, sometimes intensifying on the streets where the embassy is located. As a result, the embassy was having difficulty providing services to Turkish citizens, even having difficulty getting citizens to come to the embassy located on a few streets away.

To ensure the safety of embassy staff and colleagues, the transitional government of the army advised the embassy to move to Port Sudan. The ambassador met with both armies, and they were even helping to move the necessary equipment and materials until attackers opened fire on the street.

No embassy staff or Turkish citizens were injured in the attack. Discussions are ongoing with both sides to determine the party responsible and their reasoning.

To ensure the safety of their staff and colleagues, the embassy will temporarily move to Port Sudan. Turkish citizens who want to return can do so safely and appropriately, as Turkey has done before, while the embassy will serve citizens in Port Sudan.
