Sagadat Nurmagambetov: Celebrating 100 Years of Kazakhstan’s First Defense Minister
On May 25th, Kazakhstan celebrates the centennial of Sagadat Nurmagambetov, the first Defense Minister of independent Kazakhstan, who played a crucial role in laying the foundations of the national army force. Born in 1924 in Enbek village of the Akmola Region, Nurmagambetov’s military career was marked by remarkable achievements spanning from World War II to the establishment of an independent Kazakhstan.
During World War II, Nurmagambetov, at the young age of 18, was enrolled in a machine gun school and later deployed to the frontline. He took part in the liberation of several regions and countries, culminating in the storming of the Reichstag in Berlin. His exemplary service during the war earned him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945.
After the war, Nurmagambetov dedicated himself to further military education before serving in various command positions. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, he was appointed as the Chairman of the State Defense Committee and later as the Minister of Defense of Kazakhstan. In this role, he played a key part in training the newly established national armed forces, forming a base of highly qualified military specialists.
Even after retiring from the army and receiving the title of Khalyk Kakharmany (National Hero), Nurmagambetov continued to serve as an advisor to Kazakhstan’s President and as a defense minister. His dedication and contribution to the defense capabilities of Kazakhstan were invaluable.
Nurmagambetov passed away in 2013 at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of service and commitment to his country. As he once wrote, “If I made a certain contribution to the defeat of fascism, to the cause of strengthening the defense capability of the Soviet state, the formation of the Kazakh armed forces, I believe that I fulfilled my duty to the Motherland.”
His life and achievements continue to inspire future generations and serve as a reminder of the importance of dedication and service to one’s country. Sagadat Nurmagambetov will always be remembered as a hero and a key figure in Kazakhstan’s military history.
