Liszt Ferenc International Airport, a vital hub of connectivity in Hungary, welcomed its first passengers on May 7, 1950. Over the past 75 years, it has served an astonishing 302 million travelers, solidifying its reputation both domestically and internationally.
Currently accommodating nearly 60,000 passengers daily, the airport has come a long way from its inaugural year. Projections for 2024 indicate that it will break all previous records, expecting to handle 17.6 million travelers and nearly 300,000 tons of cargo, according to World Economy.
Budapest Airport has garnered accolades, having been ranked among Europe’s best airports based on passenger feedback. In 2025, it received the title of the best airport in the region for an impressive twelfth consecutive time, as noted by Skytrax. Each day, an average of 300 flights departs, connecting Budapest to 142 international destinations.
In recent decades, Liszt Ferenc Airport has established itself as a crucial player not only in passenger transport but also in air cargo logistics. The launch of BUD Cargo City has positioned it as one of the most significant hubs for import and export in Central and Eastern Europe.
The airport’s name pays homage to the renowned composer Franz Liszt, coinciding with the 175th anniversary of his masterpiece, Love Dreams. This milestone has inspired a year-long celebration that intertwines music, culture, and travel.
As Liszt Ferenc International Airport marks this significant anniversary, it stands as a testament to Hungary’s connectivity to the world, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange for decades.
