Kazakhstan Commemorates 90th Anniversary of Celebrated Poet Tumanbai Moldagaliyev

Astana – On March 20, Kazakhstan honored the 90th anniversary of Kazakh poet Tumanbai Moldagaliyev, renowned for his works reflecting love and nature. Moldagaliyev holds a special place in Kazakh literature for his contributions, including composing Kazakhstan’s first national anthem.

Born in 1935 in the Zharsu village of the Almaty Region, Moldagaliyev discovered his passion for poetry while studying philology at Kazakh State University in the mid-1950s. His literary career began with the publication of his debut poem, “To the Ukrainian Girl,” in 1954, followed by his first poetry collection, “Student Notebook,” in 1957. Throughout his life, Moldagaliyev published over 40 poetry collections and translated works of Russian and Western literary figures into Kazakh.

Moldagaliyev’s lyrical talents extended beyond the written word as he collaborated with esteemed composers like Nurgisa tlendiyev, Shamshi Kaldayakov, and Aset Beyseuov to create timeless melodies that remain beloved in Kazakh music. Some of his most cherished works include “Birds’ Song,” “Birds Are Coming Back,” “In the Arms of Happiness,” and “Spring Calling.”

Additionally, Moldagaliyev co-wrote Kazakhstan’s inaugural national anthem, “Zharalgan Namystan Kaharman Halykpyz,” in collaboration with poets Kadyr Myrza-Ali, Zhadyra Daribaeva, and Muzafar Alimbayev. This anthem served as the country’s official national song from 1992 until 2006 when it was replaced by “My Kazakhstan.”

Sadly, Moldagaliyev passed away in 2011, leaving behind a rich musical and literary legacy that continues to inspire and resonate with generations. Kazakhstan’s commemoration of his 90th anniversary serves as a tribute to his enduring impact on the country’s cultural heritage.
