Centuries-Old Tradition Comes to Life in Vibrant Images Once More

The traditional “Bocuk Night” in Çamlıca town of Edirne’s Keşan district brought together hundreds of people from various provinces for a night of fun and colorful celebrations. The event, which has a history of a thousand years and maintains Balkan traditions, saw citizens dressed in costumes, painted faces, and wearing masks for a night of festivities.

During the night, dozens of people wearing white sheets and painted faces roamed the streets, startling residents by tapping on windows and doors. Makeup and mask competitions added to the carnival atmosphere, with participants expressing their enjoyment and happiness throughout the night.

According to tradition, the Night of the Boy is considered the toughest night of the winter season. Legend has it that if a thrown throne freezes on water by morning, it signifies health, strength, and resilience for the household throughout the year. In addition to various food items cooked during the night, such as zucchini, corn, fruits, and nuts, young people in white sheets traditionally scare their neighbors by proclaiming that the “Boy is coming.”

The presence of the mysterious “Boy” figure in white is believed to ward off evil and prevent the arrival of “Bocuk’s wife” to homes. This age-old tradition continues to be celebrated with enthusiasm and participation from family members, neighbors, and friends, keeping the spirit of the Night of the Boy alive in Çamlıca town.
