Charges Against 7 Students Accused of Supporting Palestine in the USA Reduced

Charges Withdrawn Against Michigan Students in Freedom of Expression Case
In a significant development, the Michigan Regional Court has withdrawn charges against seven students from the University of Michigan, following a brief hearing by the prosecutor’s office. The quick resolution of the case has been hailed as a victory not just for the students involved, but for advocates of free speech nationwide.
Amir Makdel, the attorney representing one of the students, expressed his satisfaction with the court’s decision. He emphasized that the outcome symbolized a triumph for all individuals who champion freedom of expression. "Today’s victory is not only for these seven students, but for everyone who believes in freedom of expression," Makdel stated.
Makdel further highlighted a broader social context, reminding attendees that many students in the U.S. still face challenges regarding their right to express their views. He passionately voiced support for Palestine, urging the audience to remain vigilant and active in promoting justice: "Today we should stand up strongly and say ‘Freedom to Palestine.’"
The decision was met with joy and applause from families and community members who had rallied in support of the students. The students—Oliver Kozler, Samantha Lewis, Henry Mackeen-Shapiro, Michael Mueller, Asad Siddiqui, Avi Tachna-Fram, and Rhiannon Willow—were initially charged following an incident last September linked to the disbandment of a Palestinian camp on campus, leading to police involvement.
All seven students maintained their innocence throughout the proceedings. Additionally, Makdel revealed concerns about potential targeting due to his legal representation. He recounted an unsettling encounter with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials upon returning to Detroit from a family vacation in the Dominican Republic. He suggested that his involvement in the Palestine movement could have influenced the questioning he faced.
This case has sparked renewed discussions about the importance of protecting free speech rights on college campuses, especially concerning sensitive geopolitical issues. As the students celebrate their legal victory, the implications of this case resonate strongly within academic and activist communities advocating for open dialogue and expression.
