Cherry Prices Soar in Gaziantep as Harvest Season Begins
Cherry Harvest Begins in Amanos Mountains Region
The cherry harvest season has kicked off in several districts located at the foot of the Amanos Mountains, including Kabaklar, Idilli, Hasanlök, Tandır, Yağızlar, Kayabaşı, and Koççagiz. With a total cultivation area of 330 decares, cherries are grown in these regions and exported both domestically and internationally. Among the cherry varieties, Napoleon type cherries are particularly favored by consumers due to their size, quality, aroma, and taste.
Mehmet Köse, the President of the İslahiye Chamber of Agriculture, mentioned that harvesting has commenced on a 330-decare area. He also stated that the first cherry of the season is valued at 10 liras in the garden and 30 liras in the market. Furthermore, he expressed satisfaction with this year’s higher yield compared to last year. Despite facing challenges such as the recent earthquakes in the region, farmers have persevered and continue to laboriously produce cherries, which are now reaping the rewards of their hard work.
Bekir Samlı, the headman of Koççagiz Neighborhood and a cherry farmer, emphasized that cherries play a crucial role in their neighborhood’s economy. Samlı stated that they sell the cherries they harvest both domestically and abroad. He wished the farmers a prosperous and abundant season ahead. While highlighting the demand for Napoleon cherries due to their outstanding quality, taste, and aroma, he mentioned that wholesale prices range from 10 to 15 liras in the garden. However, in the consumer market, the prices are around 30 liras. Samlı added that their goal is to continuously improve the quality of their cherries without compromising on their standards.
With the cherry harvest now underway, the Amanos Mountains region anticipates a successful season. Cherries, known for their delicious flavor and vibrant color, continue to be a significant agricultural product for the communities in this area.
