Hamas Launches Largest Attack on Israel, Causing Massive Damage and Loss of Life
In a major escalation of violence, Hamas launched its biggest attack against Israel in recent years. On Saturday, the militant group fired more than 5,000 rockets towards southern Israel in a span of only 20 minutes and initiated a ground operation. The infiltrating forces from the border quickly seized control of multiple regions, resulting in countless civilian casualties and numerous captures.
One of the areas that suffered horrific losses was the town of Sderot, home to approximately 30,000 people. Hamas engaged in a deadly clash with the police and managed to take control of a police station, brutally killing 20 officers who were captured during the skirmish. Additionally, another massacre occurred during a festival held in the border region. Independent sources confirmed that 260 civilians lost their lives in this tragic event.
Former Mossad intelligence chief, Danny Yatom, expressed his dismay over the attack. Yatom criticized the intelligence failure, stating that no one had anticipated the scope and intensity of Hamas’ assault. Israeli authorities were led to believe that Hamas had no intention of launching such a devastating attack. Yatom declared that the tactics employed by Israel had completely collapsed. In response, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched multiple airstrikes, targeting Hamas’ infrastructure. The IDF reported hitting various strategic sites, including a mosque in the Jabaliya region that was allegedly being used by the group.
In terms of casualties, the Israeli army stated that since Saturday morning, 700 Israelis had been killed, and 2,150 others had sustained injuries. The IDF estimated that a total of 3,284 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip, while Hamas claimed that they had launched over 5,000 rockets. Israel, on the other hand, reported hitting 653 targets. According to the latest update from the Ministry of Health in Gaza, the Israeli airstrikes caused the death of 493 people, with 2,751 individuals injured.
Amid the ongoing conflict, Qatar has emerged as an active mediator. A Hamas official revealed that Qatar had been instrumental in brokering a potential prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas. The anonymous source disclosed that Hamas had informed Qatar of its willingness to proceed with the exchange if all 36 Palestinian female prisoners held in Israeli prisons were released.
The situation continues to be highly volatile, with both sides experiencing significant losses and mounting tensions. International efforts to restore peace and prevent further escalation are urgently needed to prevent further loss of life and destruction.
