Chinese Brands Dominate the Local Pre-Owned Car Industry
BYD’s Surge in Popularity in Hungary’s Used Car Market
According to a recent analysis by Used car.hu, the popularity of BYD has significantly increased in the used car market in Hungary since 2023. Additionally, MG has emerged as the favorite among Chinese car brands in the country.
The study focused on the competition among Chinese car brands between 2023 and 2024, particularly in the electric vehicle segment. While there were no changes in the rankings for conventional powertrains, BYD has taken the lead in electric models. MG emerged as the most popular brand during this period, with the MG ZS and MG EHS models garnering the most interest at average prices of approximately HUF 7.5 million and HUF 8.9 million respectively.
Márk Koralewsky, the head of the business unit at Used car.hu, highlighted MG’s continued popularity in Hungary, attributing it to the brand’s diverse range of models, including internal combustion engine vehicles. Despite MG’s stronghold, BYD emerged as the big winner during the review period, with a significant increase in interest in its electric cars, surpassing its competitors in electric car sales.
Among BYD’s models, the ATTO 3, SEAL, and DOLPHIN secured positions in the top 10 in terms of popularity. On the other hand, Dongfeng, which held the second position in 2023 in terms of interested buyers, was overtaken by BYD and OMODA in 2024. Only Dongfeng’s seven-seater U-TOUR model maintained its popularity, with an average price of HUF 13.7 million.
Overall, the most popular Chinese car brands advertised on Hasznaltauto.hu in 2024 were MG ZS, MG EHS, BYD Act 3, BYD SEAL, OMODA Omoda 5, MG HS, MG MG4, BYD DOLPHIN, MG MG5, and DONGFENG U-TOUR.
The rise of BYD and the consistent popularity of MG demonstrate the growing appeal of Chinese car brands in Hungary’s automotive market.
