Chinese Company Set to Build Battery Plant in Hungary as World’s 9th Biggest Producer Expands

Chinese battery manufacturer Eve Power will establish its first European plant in Debrecen, Hungary, according to the country’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó. The company will invest €3.7bn ($4.3bn) in the venture, which will create over 1,000 jobs and provide batteries to a BMW car plant currently under construction in the region. The government is backing the project with €40m. An environmentally-sustainable facility, the plant will source 95% of its water from ground water and purified waste water. Szijjártó claimed that Hungary applies stricter environmental criteria than EU rules, which must be met by other potential battery plant projects in the country.
