Chinese Police Officers to Start Patrolling in Hungary

Hungary and China have recently signed an agreement that focuses on cooperation in judicial and security matters, as reported by the German newspaper, The World. The agreement allows police officers from both countries to conduct joint patrols, enhancing communication between citizens and authorities of Hungary and China.
The Ministry of Interior in Hungary confirmed that the collaboration between Hungarian and Chinese police officers is aimed at improving security in tourist areas during peak tourist periods and events that draw large crowds. Budapest, in particular, is a popular destination for Chinese tourists, further emphasizing the importance of this agreement.
It is noteworthy that the number of Chinese nationals living in Hungary has been increasing steadily, with over 18,000 Chinese citizens recorded in the 2022 census. The Chinese community in Hungary typically holds only Chinese citizenship without Hungarian citizenship.
Similar agreements have been made in the past, with Hungarian police officers assisting Croatian counterparts during peak tourist seasons and joint patrols conducted with Austrian police officers at Lake Balaton. Furthermore, there are parallels to an agreement between China and Serbia, where Chinese police officers patrol cities popular with Chinese tourists.
The agreement between Hungary and China extends beyond economic interests, as China has invested heavily in various projects in Hungary, including a railroad line, e-car industry factories, and a campus for Fudan University. Hungary’s participation in China’s “Belt and Road Initiative” forum in Beijing demonstrates the strong relationship between the two countries.
Overall, the agreement signifies a deepening partnership between Hungary and China in security matters, paving the way for further cooperation in the future.
