CHP Focused on Izmir and Aydın Before Local Elections
As the local election process in Turkey continues, the main opposition party CHP is placing special emphasis on the cities of Izmir and Aydın. The question on many people’s minds is whether the candidates for these cities will be announced by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel before the new year.
Özel has indicated that Aydın’s candidate may be announced sooner rather than later. He explained that the delay in announcing the candidate was a strategic move to ensure that similar municipalities would not be affected by the decision. However, he stressed that there were no other reasons for the delay.
In contrast, there seems to be a disagreement within the party regarding the selection of candidates for Izmir. According to reports from Milliyet Newspaper, there is a “big problem in Izmir,” with Mayor İmamoğlu advocating for a list similar to those in Istanbul. However, it is alleged that the party headquarters is opposed to this idea.
Further discussions on the matter were reportedly held during a recent CHP Party Assembly meeting where the issue of mayoral candidates was on the agenda. Some party council members raised concerns about the selection process for Istanbul and Izmir, questioning the authority of the provincial presidencies in conducting candidate interviews.
In response, Özel clarified that the interviews in Istanbul were not binding and were merely meant to establish a conversational relationship. He emphasized that candidate studies and profile analysis were ongoing for Istanbul, and the party council was not initially involved in the process.
