Civil Defense Drill Held in Gemikonağı – 2024
“Civil Defense, Disaster Management and Response Exercise-2024” Takes Place in Lefke
The “Civil Defense, Disaster Management and Response Exercise-2024” was held today in the Gemikonağı region of Lefke. The exercise saw the participation of various officials and citizens, including Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces Commander Major General Sebahattin Kılınç, Security Forces Commander Major General İlker Görgülü, and other key figures.
A total of 345 personnel from 21 institutions and organizations participated in the exercise, showcasing their expertise in disaster management and response. The drill focused on enhancing preparedness and coordination among various stakeholders, including the Civil Defense Organization, security forces, health ministries, and search and rescue teams.
The exercise began with a moment of silence and the National Anthem, followed by speeches from Central District Governor Niyazi Öztürk and Civil Defense Organization President Atilla Karaca. Governor Öztürk emphasized the importance of such exercises in preparing for disasters, while President Karaca highlighted the need to minimize loss of life and property in emergency situations.
The drill simulated an earthquake scenario with various activities such as evacuation and response to debris, rescue operations, traffic accident interventions, and more. The participants demonstrated their skills in handling different emergency situations effectively and efficiently.
After the completion of the drill activities, a “Civil Defense Search and Rescue Exhibition” was organized, showcasing the capabilities of the participating teams. AFAD Vice President Hamza Taşdelen commended the efforts of the teams and emphasized the importance of earthquake preparedness in the region.
Overall, the exercise highlighted the importance of coordination and collaboration among various institutions and organizations in ensuring effective disaster management and response. It served as a reminder of the need to be prepared for any eventuality and to work together towards a safer and more resilient community.
