Sea Withdrawal Continues on the Aegean Coast
The phenomenon of sea withdrawal on the Aegean coast is ongoing, causing concern among residents and experts alike. In Marmaris, the Adaköy Neighborhood has experienced sea levels being pulled up to 5 meters due to the withdrawal. Additionally, beaches in Uzunyalı and İçmeler have seen a decrease in water levels by about 2 meters.
In Fethiye, a similar trend has been observed with approximately 2 meters of withdrawal in the Gulf. Even on the Artificial Duck Island, water withdrawal has occurred near the shore, prompting further investigations into the causes behind this unusual occurrence.
Assoc. Dr. Ceyhun Özçelik from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University’s Department of Civil Engineering, specializing in Water Resources, explained that natural events such as tides, storms, winds, and topography are the main factors contributing to the sea withdrawal on the Aegean coast. He reassured that the phenomenon is not expected to be linked to earthquakes, and further research is being conducted to better understand and monitor the situation.
