Civil Society Organizations Organize Observation Walk to Protect Coastal Plants and Turtle Nests
Tomorrow, some civil society organizations will be holding an observation walk of coastal plants and turtle nests on the beach of DAÜ Beach Club. The event will feature a presentation by Stage Education and Management Specialist Dr. Asuman Korukoğlu.
In a statement signed by Yusuf Şentuğ on behalf of the organizations, it was announced that the event will take place at 06:30 in the morning. Recent news reports have raised concerns about the potential use of EMU Marine Club lands for touristic investment purposes. The region is highlighted as a complete living environment with natural flora and fauna elements, serving as a unique example of a dune ecosystem.
The statement emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural sand dunes in the north of the island, which are deemed to be in danger of extinction. Various plants such as sand lilies, sand ivy, and sand oleander, along with sea turtle nests, are found in the region, underscoring the significance of protecting the fauna and flora.
“We do not want new investments to jeopardize the existing beaches and habitats of the plants and animals living in the region. It is crucial to preserve the natural beauty of the area,” the statement said, urging authorities and the public to prioritize conservation efforts.
All members of the public are invited to participate in the event scheduled for tomorrow to support the protection of coastal plants and turtle nests. The civil society organizations organizing and supporting the event include “Always Friends of Nature, Cyprus Wetland Society, Social Existence Association, Karpaz Friends Association, Mağusa Women’s Center Association, Social Democracy Party, Green Peace Movement, Cyprus Turkish Medical Association, Mağusa Culture Association, Retro Musicians, Mağusa City Museum Association, Mağusa Walled City Association, Cyprus Art Association, Lefke Environment and Promotion Association, Eastern Mediterranean University Unity, and Solidarity Union.”
