UN Cyprus Peacekeeping Chief Seeks Progress in Cyprus Issue
Colin Stewart, the Chief of UN Peacekeeping Mission and Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General in Cyprus, has urged the leaders to view the next period as a crucial opportunity for progress in the Cyprus issue. Speaking after a meeting with President Ersin Tatar at the Presidential Palace, Stewart said that the recent elections, which had been a source of distraction for local and regional actors for months, were now completed, and he hoped progress would be made in the Cyprus issue. He noted that his meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Christodoulidis the day before was “very constructive,” and emphasized the importance of seizing this opportunity to solve the issue. Stewart also acknowledged that as the UN, they see the European Union as an important partner in Cyprus and that there should be room for them to play a constructive role. The European Union’s active participation was not on the agenda at the meeting, according to Stewart.
