Colombia to Sever Diplomatic Ties with Israel

President Gustavo Petro made a bold declaration during the “May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day” celebrations in Bogota, Colombia. Speaking to the public gathered in Bolivar Square, President Petro announced that diplomatic relations with the State of Israel would be severed the following day, labeling the Israeli government as genocidal.
Citing the atrocities committed by Israel in Gaza, President Petro emphasized the need to take a stand against such actions. He stated, “All humanity who took to the streets today agree with us: We cannot go back to the age of genocide. We cannot stand by and watch an entire people being destroyed before the eyes of humanity. If Palestine dies, humanity also dies.”
President Petro highlighted the tragic loss of innocent lives, including babies, in Gaza due to Israeli bombings. He noted the global outrage and protests that have erupted in response to these incidents.
This warning to sever diplomatic ties with Israel was not made lightly. President Petro had previously stated on March 26 that he would take this action if Israel did not adhere to the UNSC’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The decision to cut off relations with Israel marks a significant stance taken by Colombia against the actions of the Israeli government. It illustrates the country’s commitment to human rights and standing up against injustice, even in the face of powerful nations.
