Commemorating André Kertész: Three Exhibitions Celebrating a Photography Legend’s 130th Birthday
The Hungarian National Museum is honoring the 130th anniversary of the birth of André Kertész (1894-1985), a renowned Hungarian-born photographer, with a series of exhibitions. The exhibitions will take place from March 23 to September 22 in Esztergom and two venues in Budapest.
A selection of Kertész’s photographs, acquired from New York in 2021, will be showcased at the Balassa Museum in Esztergom, the Hungarian National Museum, and the Robert Capa Center in Budapest. These photographs offer a unique glimpse into Kertész’s work, including never-before-seen images.
Born in Budapest in 1894, Kertész spent his childhood in various locations in Hungary before moving to Paris in 1925. Throughout his life, he maintained a strong connection to his homeland, returning to Hungary multiple times and donating his work to create a memorial museum in Szigetbecse.
The focus of the exhibition series at the Hungarian National Museum is on Kertész’s early years and the influences that shaped his artistic vision. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the background of his departure from Hungary and his journey to becoming a world-renowned photographer.
The exhibitions will feature a collection of early vintage prints, providing a comprehensive overview of Kertész’s formative years and artistic development. Visitors can also view contemporary enlargements and projections of these historic images.
The first exhibition, “André Kertész in Esztergom,” will be on display at the Balassa Museum from March 23 to June 23. Subsequent exhibits will take place at the Hungarian National Museum and the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest.
