New Flavor Bazaar in Hatay to Showcase Local Cuisine and Boost Tourism
In the vibrant city of Kahramanmaraş, known for its gastronomic delights and inclusion in UNESCO’s “Creative Cities Network,” a new project is underway to revitalize businesses that were impacted by the devastating earthquakes on February 6, 2023.
The Hatay Flavors Bazaar, situated in the Odabaşı District of central Antakya, is nearing completion under the guidance of the Governorship and the Eastern Mediterranean Development Agency. This unique culinary hub is set to feature 18 restaurants designed in the style of traditional Antakya houses, with 80 percent of the construction already finished.
Visitors to the bazaar can look forward to indulging in a variety of local specialties, including iconic dishes such as Antakya künefe, kaytaz pastry, kömbe, and Antakya paper kebab—all of which have received geographical indication recognition. The opening of the bazaar is anticipated to inject new energy into Hatay’s gastronomy tourism scene and enhance social interactions, with the first guests expected to be welcomed in July.
Governor Mustafa Masatlı emphasized the rich cultural heritage of Hatay, shaped by its history of hosting diverse civilizations, which is reflected in its cuisine. He highlighted the bazaar’s mission to provide a platform for renowned restaurants with significant brand value that were impacted by the earthquakes, aiming to stimulate employment opportunities and economic growth in the region.
With a commitment to preserving and promoting Hatay’s culinary identity, the bazaar will not only serve as a food destination but also as a cultural and social gathering space. Governor Masatlı underlined the importance of gastronomy as a central aspect of Hatay’s heritage and lifestyle, expressing his hopes that the bazaar will showcase the region’s culinary traditions to a wider audience.
As part of their efforts to elevate the city’s profile, Governor Masatlı revealed plans to increase the number of geographically indicated products and promote local delicacies. Through initiatives like the Hatay Flavors Bazaar, the goal is to enhance the city’s brand value and contribute to its economic, social, and touristic development.
As Hatay prepares to unveil its newest culinary hotspot, residents and visitors alike can anticipate a flavorsome journey through the region’s culinary delights and a celebration of its rich gastronomic heritage.
