
Completion of General Assembly; Next Meeting on Thursday, December 7

The General Assembly of the Republic of Cyprus has completed today’s meeting with several important topics discussed and decisions made. The next meeting of the assembly is scheduled for Thursday, December 7 at 10:00. During the meeting, unanimous decisions were made on several important bills and reports.
First, the Draft Law on Compensation, Exchange, and Return (Amendment) of Immovable Properties was discussed and unanimously accepted. The bill was presented by the Law, Political Affairs, and Foreign Relations Committee, and was noted to be of immense importance by the Chairman of the committee, UBP Deputy, Yasemi Öztürk.
Following this, the “Trademarks (Amendment) Draft Law” and the report of the Law, Political Affairs, and Foreign Relations Committee were also read at the General Assembly. Although initially accepted, technical errors were cited, leading to the decision that the bill be withdrawn to the committee for further review. This decision was also unanimously approved.
In addition to the discussions and decisions made regarding important bills, current speeches were also presented at the General Assembly. Notable issues raised included political developments, child rights, women’s participation in the workforce, and increasing property sales.
In particular, CTP Deputy Sami Özuslu addressed the issue of the case involving Journalist Ali Kişmir, urging the Parliament to take immediate action to eliminate what was labeled as a “disgraceful shame of democracy.” He also noted a potential threat to the broadcasting equipment of all private radio stations in the country, an issue he called on the government to address.
CTP Deputy Ürün Solyalı raised concerns about the increasing number of children who are abused, neglected, and involved in crime, emphasizing the need for stronger measures to protect and rehabilitate them.
Furthermore, CTP Deputy Doğuş Derya focused on the decreasing rate of women’s participation in the workforce, highlighting the discrimination and challenges faced by women, especially in terms of accessing employment and dealing with poverty.
Finally, CTP Deputy Fide Kürşat addressed the issue of uncontrolled property sales, which has become a cause for concern in both domestic and foreign press. He stressed the importance of maintaining sovereignty and economic stability for the Turkish Cypriots.
