Restoration of Historical Mosque in Tera: A Cultural Heritage Initiative

The Cultural Heritage Technical Committee has successfully completed restoration work on the historical mosque located in the village of Tera (Çakırlar), situated in the BAF region. This initiative aims to preserve and protect important cultural landmarks in the area.

Ali Tuncay, Co-Chairman of the Cultural Heritage Technical Committee, shared insights with Cyprus regarding the committee’s efforts. Tuncay noted that the mosque restoration was a collaborative project that involved visits by committee members alongside local residents.

According to Tuncay, the restoration efforts were focused on maintaining the mosque’s structural integrity. Significant interventions were undertaken to uphold its architectural and historical significance. The project included cleaning the surrounding area, removing invasive vegetation, and repairing wall plasters, roofs, and wooden doors and windows.

Tuncay also highlighted that the committee is actively engaged in ongoing protection works for mosques in Southern Cyprus. He mentioned that restoration efforts for the Evdim (Düzkaya) Mosque are nearing completion, while projects for the Dohni (Tashkent) and Tuzla mosques are still in progress.

These restoration works are being executed with technical support from the European Union and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), underscoring the collaborative efforts towards preserving cultural heritage in the region.

Conclusion

The completion of the mosque restoration in Tera represents a significant step in safeguarding the historical and cultural landscape of the BAF region. Such initiatives not only enhance community pride but also promote awareness and appreciation of the area’s rich heritage.
