Man Charged with Assault and Threats in Traffic Dispute Found Dead
April 22, 2023 – In a recent development, a driver involved in a traffic dispute on the Izmir-Istanbul highway has been found dead. The incident took place at around 17:30 when an argument erupted between two drivers. According to the indictment filed by the Manisa Soma Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, the driver of the car with the license plate 34 BJC 892, identified as attorney Fatih Uzun, engaged in a heated exchange with the driver of the vehicle with the license plate 48 TC 377, Hüseyin Tayfun Üçgül.
Eyewitnesses report that the argument escalated, with both parties hurling insults at each other. The situation became physical when Uzun swung a fist at Üçgül, narrowly missing him. In response, Üçgül kicked and injured Uzun’s knee, leaving him in pain. During the altercation, Üçgül allegedly declared, “You do not know who is who.” The spouses of both parties witnessed the incident.
The indictment further revealed that Uzun, in a fit of anger, threatened Üçgül, mentioning his connection to the public prosecutors and the mafia. He warned Üçgül that he would be held accountable for his actions. As a result of the incident, Uzun suffered a broken leg.
Based on the evidence presented, there is sufficient grounds to pursue a public lawsuit. The indictment also calls for Üçgül to be tried for ‘public insult’ and ‘intentional injury’, with a prison sentence of 6 years and 10 months being sought. Üçgül is a police officer in the Dalaman District Police Department.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Interior initiated an administrative investigation and appointed an inspector to look into Üçgül’s conduct. As a result, Üçgül has been reassigned from the Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime (KOM) Branch to a less active unit. The inspector will examine the incident on the highway as well as the officer’s assets.
In a tragic turn of events, Üçgül’s body was discovered in a car parked in a forest area in the Gökbel District of Ortaca, Muğla. It is believed that he took his own life by shooting himself in the head with a pistol. Üçgül, a father of three, was found deceased and his body was taken to the Muğla Forensic Medicine Institute Morgue for autopsy. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
