Construction Contractors Association President and Union Employees Detained – BRTK

The Chairman of the Cyprus Turkish Construction Contractors Association (KTİMB) and union employees were brought before the Nicosia District Court today as part of an investigation conducted by the Financial Crimes Department of the General Directorate of Police. A two-day detention order was issued against the suspects, with charges including “Extortion”, “Issuing a Forged Document”, and “Obtaining Records by Fraud.”

During the hearing, Police Sergeant Yahya Suiçmez revealed that the suspects allegedly received money to speed up procedures for certain applications. Suspect C.G. was said to have received 135,800 Euros from applicants between 2022 and 2023. It was also noted that forged documents were used to facilitate the entry of workers to the country.

Investigation Officer Suiçmez mentioned that suspects HA and N.T. were involved in transactions related to the illegal bringing of people to the island. The investigation uncovered discrepancies in the number of individuals brought into the country and raised suspicions of further wrongdoing.

Lawyers representing the suspects did not object to the two-day detention period but raised questions about the investigation process. The Nicosia District Court Judge ordered the suspects to be detained in police custody for two days to facilitate a thorough investigation.

The case highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in the construction industry, as well as the need for rigorous oversight to prevent fraudulent activities. Authorities are expected to continue their investigation to uncover the full extent of the alleged crimes.
