Construction excavation uncovers ancient burial chamber

Archaeologists in the Ilkadım district of Turkey’s Karasamsun region have uncovered a burial chamber believed to date from the Hellenistic period. The chamber was discovered during excavations for a construction foundation in an area that is a third-degree protected site. Following cleaning, the tomb was taken under protection. Experts from the local museum are currently investigating the tomb, which is said to be a “beautiful tomb as a work” and could contain jewellery, utensils and tear bottles.”
The excavation is being monitored by a committee which includes local people, archaeologists and government representatives, who will decide whether to allow construction to continue. Similar situations have arisen during previous construction and road works in the protected area.
