Construction of Motorway Linking up to Romanian Border Begins

Construction of the Second Phase of M49 Expressway to Begin Soon

The public procurement results for the second phase of the M49 expressway have been announced in the European tender notice, as reported by Hungarian Builders. This development paves the way for the construction of a new section that will connect the M3 motorway to the Romanian border.

Duna Aszfalt Út és Mélyépítő Zrt. has been awarded the contract for the second section between Ököritófülpös and Csenger in eastern Hungary, as well as the design and construction of the Kocsord plant engineering works. The 17.6-kilometer stretch of the M49 expressway will extend all the way to the border, facilitating faster travel between Hungary and Romania.

The Ministry of Construction and Transport’s ambitious project aims to link the M3 motorway to Csenger, near the Romanian border, providing a direct route to Satu Mare (Szatmárnémeti) on the other side of the border and to the Partium region.

The total value of the contracts for the second phase is estimated at HUF 141.9 billion (EUR 361.8 million) and will include the construction of a four-lane road with three level junctions and four roundabouts. Additionally, a road border crossing point on the Hungarian-Romanian border will be built as part of the project.

This significant infrastructure development is crucial for enhancing connectivity and facilitating smoother transportation between Hungary and Romania. With construction set to begin soon, the completion of the M49 expressway’s second phase will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the region’s economic growth and development.
