Continued Interrogation of Suspended South Korean President Yoon
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is currently facing a tumultuous time as he is being interrogated by the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) on suspicion of sedition and abuse of power. The interrogation, which was scheduled to begin in the morning, was delayed to the afternoon due to health reasons cited by Yoon.
Yoon’s lawyer, Yun Gap-geun, has stated that his client does not wish to be further questioned, asserting that Yoon had already fully explained his position the day before. Yoon, who was removed from office by the South Korean National Assembly for declaring martial law, was detained within the scope of the martial law investigation.
During the first day of interrogation, Yoon was questioned for over 10 hours and reportedly refused to testify. This unprecedented situation marks the first time in South Korean history that a head of state has been detained. Investigators have 48 hours to detain Yoon before seeking an arrest warrant from the court.
The declaration of martial law by President Yoon on December 3, 2024, citing opposition involvement in anti-state activities, was met with backlash and eventually overturned by parliament and the Council of Ministers. Following his suspension from office pending a decision by the Constitutional Court, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo assumed temporary leadership.
However, amidst political turmoil, Prime Minister Han also faced impeachment, leading to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Choi Sang-mok taking over the presidency. The future remains uncertain for President Yoon Suk Yeol as the investigation unfolds and the constitutional crisis in South Korea continues to evolve.
