Controversial Ankara Billboard Sparks Debate

A billboard controversy has emerged in Ankara, stirring up debates among various stakeholders. The Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects expressed their dissatisfaction with a billboard that was recently erected in Güvenpark, prompting action from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change.

The billboard in question was installed in Güvenpark, a prominent location in Ankara, by the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality. However, it was soon discovered that the construction took place within the “1st Degree Natural Protected Area” without the necessary approvals. The Chamber of Architects Ankara Branch raised a complaint on December 11, leading to an investigation by ministry teams.

Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the digital billboard encroached upon the protection area of a monument statue, and there was no approved urban design project for its installation. Consequently, the Ministry instructed the municipality to remove the billboard. Further deliberations will take place with the Ankara Natural Heritage Preservation Regional Commission to address the issue.

If the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality fails to comply with the removal order, legal action may be pursued. Those found guilty of unauthorized construction or physical interventions within the “1st Degree Natural Protected Area” can face imprisonment ranging from 2 to 5 years, along with substantial monetary fines.

As the billboard controversy unfolds, residents and authorities alike are closely monitoring the developments to ensure compliance with regulations and the preservation of Ankara’s natural heritage.
