Dunajská Streda football club DAC has expressed profound disappointment and concern over the recent events during Friday’s match against Slovan Bratislava, particularly condemning the offensive choreography displayed by the home fans towards Hungarians, as reported by M4 sport.
During the match between Slovan and DAC, the home supporters in Bratislava unveiled a massive tifo that equated Hungary with Mongolia. The tifo depicted a figure in a Slovan jersey conversing with individuals in front of a map, with DAC, Mongolia, and Fradi (representing Budapest football club Ferencváros) labeled on their backs. Below the tifo was a message in Slovak stating, “Slovakia is the country of Slovaks and Slovan fans.”
DAC, a football club based in Dunajská Streda in southern Slovakia, a region with a significant Hungarian population, strongly condemned the discriminatory behavior directed towards Hungarians and the actions of the Slovan supporters. They announced plans to file an official complaint with the Slovak Football Association.
The club emphasized that the offensive tifo not only mocked their team but also touched upon ethnic, cultural, and national sensitivities that have no place in modern football or society. They stressed the importance of unity and inclusivity in the sport, urging for an investigation into the matter.
Furthermore, DAC called on all stakeholders in Slovak football, including clubs, leagues, media partners, and regulators, to reassess the values promoted in stadiums and in the public sphere. They emphasized the need for respect, dignity, and equality to prevail both on and off the pitch.
Despite the display of anti-Hungarian sentiments during the match, Slovak media outlets did not address the issue of animosity towards Hungarians. While some articles acknowledged the inappropriate nature of the tifo, there was minimal commentary on the Hungarian abuse. The Slovak Football Association remained silent on the matter.
As the DAC communiqué highlighted, exclusion has no place in modern Central European football. The club reaffirmed its commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and cultural richness within its community and region.
