Controversial Match Leads to Prize Money for Female Boxer
Hungarian boxer Luca Hámori may have been defeated in the quarter-finals of the Olympic boxing tournament in Paris by Algerian opponent Imane Khelif, but she is still being recognized for her performance. The Hungarian Boxing Association has announced that they will pay Hámori the bronze medal prize money of HUF 31.35 million (EUR 78,610) as a token of appreciation for her efforts.
Competing in the women’s 66-kilogram weight class, Hámori finished fifth in the tournament after a unanimous loss to Khelif in the quarter-finals. Despite the outcome, Hámori displayed sportsmanship by congratulating her opponent on her victory.
The Hungarian Boxing Association commended Hámori on her successful Olympic appearance, which they deem as the most successful in the last 12 years. In addition to their support, they are also providing her with a special reward for her dedication and performance.
While Hámori’s opponent Khelif has been a subject of controversy due to past disqualifications at the International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Boxing Championships, she was allowed to compete in the Olympics under the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The decision to permit her participation was supported by IOC Honorary Member Pál Schmitt, who confirmed that Khelif is registered as a female competitor.
Despite the differing opinions between the IBA and the IOC regarding Khelif’s eligibility, the focus remains on celebrating the achievements of athletes like Luca Hámori and the spirit of competition at the Paris Olympics. The Hungarian Boxing Association’s decision to award prize money to Hámori reflects their appreciation for her dedication and performance on the international stage.
