The United Kingdom Holds Coronation Ceremony for King Charles III
On May 6, 2023, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland celebrated the official coronation ceremony for King Charles III. The ceremony was held in Westminster Abbey in London and was attended by more than 2,200 people from over 200 countries. Gun salutes sounded throughout the kingdom as the crown of St. Edward the Confessor was placed on the monarch’s head by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.
As is customary, Charles III will now be enthroned, after which the archbishop, the clergy, and Prince William of Wales will swear allegiance to him. Attendees at Westminster Abbey will also have the opportunity to swear an oath to the king, with this tradition now extended to British viewers watching the ceremony.
The 74-year-old Charles III ascended the throne on September 8, 2022, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The coronation ceremony took place eight months after Her Majesty’s passing.
Notably, the ceremony was even attended by the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov. Overjoyed guests at the ceremony and the archbishop exclaimed, “God save the king!” as the crown was placed on Charles III’s head.
The celebration of the coronation of a British monarch is steeped in centuries of tradition, and the crowning of King Charles III was no exception. The world watched as history unfolded in one of the most important moments in the United Kingdom’s modern history.
