Freshman Camp at Budapest University of Technology and Economics Under Fire for Harsh Treatment
Students attending the freshman camp of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) have raised concerns about the treatment they experienced during the camp. Reports from students revealed a strict and degrading atmosphere, with practices that resembled a military boot camp rather than an orientation program.
According to sources, some students were so distressed by the conditions that they left the camp before it concluded. The accounts shared by students included instances of body searches, strict rules governing bathroom breaks, and degrading practices imposed by upperclassmen.
In response to the complaints, BME released a statement affirming that student safety is their utmost priority. The university has formed a working group, consisting of members from university leadership and the student body, to investigate the allegations and assess the current regulations governing such camps.
The troubling reports from students shed light on the grim conditions at the freshman camp. Students recounted being forced to endure long walks in the sun, prohibited from using their suitcases, late dinners, and mandatory body searches conducted by security personnel.
One student shared that upon arrival, students had to empty their bags, with even their medications being confiscated. Food and beverages brought by students were discarded, and students had to seek permission to access their medications later in the evening.
The dorm rooms at the camp were reportedly co-ed, with a significant gender imbalance and restrictions on bathroom usage. Students were allowed minimal breaks for bathroom visits, with strict time limits for showering and other personal tasks. Supervisors were said to enforce these rules by banging on walls and shower stalls with a baseball bat, creating a stressful and tense environment for the students.
The freshman camp at BME also garnered attention for banning condoms under the guidance of the university’s Student Union. While the Student Union justified the decision as a measure to ensure a positive and safe experience for all freshmen, the ban sparked further controversy among students and observers.
Both BME administration and the Student Union have been contacted for comments regarding the allegations. BME reiterated its commitment to student safety and education, mentioning that the camp rules were established with the goal of providing a secure environment for students.
