Crucial Decision Looms in Hunter Biden Case
The trial of US President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, for allegedly purchasing a gun while under the influence of drugs, has continued in the Delaware District Court. Hunter Biden’s daughter, Naomi Biden, provided key testimony during the hearing, revealing details about her visits to her father in 2018. She mentioned visiting him in Los Angeles in August and September while he was undergoing rehabilitation treatment. Naomi Biden expressed pride in her father’s progress during these visits, noting that he was in the cleanest state she had seen him in since her uncle’s death.
Prosecutor Leo Wise emphasized in his closing argument that they did not need to prove that Hunter Biden used drugs on a specific day. Wise stated that the legal standard was that Hunter Biden had an active connection with drugs at the time of purchasing the gun, alleging that Hunter Biden was aware of his drug use during that time.
Wise reminded the jurors that the fame of Hunter Biden’s relatives should not influence their judgment, emphasizing that the decision should be based solely on the evidence presented. He underscored that nobody is above the law, and the prosecution must prove Hunter Biden’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, contended that the prosecution failed to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that Hunter Biden was actively using drugs when he bought the gun. Lowell argued that the case was built on suspicion and assumption, as no one witnessed Hunter Biden using drugs in the month of the gun purchase.
As the closing statements concluded, the jurors began deliberating on Hunter Biden’s guilt. The proceedings are set to resume the following day for the jury’s decision.
Hunter Biden, who struggled with substance abuse following his brother’s passing in 2015, faces charges for allegedly lying to a gun dealer, providing false information during the gun purchase, and possessing a firearm unlawfully for 11 days. If found guilty, Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison. This case holds significance as it marks the first time the son of a sitting US president has appeared before a judge in a criminal trial.
