Prague Entrepreneur Uses Silicon Valley Mindset to Preserve Uyghur Culture
Said Maximov is on a mission to bring a Silicon Valley start-up mindset to address the challenge of preserving Uyghur culture and traditions in Central Asia. The 36-year-old entrepreneur, with a background in public relations and marketing, founded Digital Yurt in late 2022 with the goal of finding a modern solution for maintaining traditions, increasing Uyghur language knowledge, and building a community for an ethnic group with a legacy of oppression, particularly in China.
Maximov’s approach to reaching the younger generation involved leveraging social media, starting with an Instagram account. Through short, engaging videos and a growing community of contributors, Digital Yurt has expanded its reach both online and offline. The initiative has organized events, raised funds for Uyghur-owned businesses, and even established a Montessori kindergarten in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to promote literacy in the Uyghur language.
At the heart of Digital Yurt’s mission is a strategy to adapt and modernize traditional practices, catering to the evolving needs and interests of the youth. Maximov acknowledges the challenges of addressing the issues faced by the Uyghur community in modern society, particularly in light of the ongoing repression in China’s Xinjiang Province.
The Chinese government’s crackdown on Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang has drawn condemnation from international organizations, including the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Reports of forced labor, mass internment, and other human rights violations have raised alarm among advocacy groups and activists.
In Kazakhstan, which is home to a significant Uyghur population, Maximov seeks to counter the negative narratives propagated by the Chinese government and educate the local community about the true plight of Uyghurs. Despite Digital Yurt’s non-political stance, Maximov emphasizes the importance of addressing the historical and present challenges faced by Uyghurs.
As Digital Yurt continues to grow, Maximov envisions expanding its reach to engage the global Uyghur diaspora and promote a positive image of Uyghur culture. From tech literacy to language preservation and business skills development, the initiative aims to empower the younger generation while honoring the traditions and language of the older generations.
