Customs and Independence: TRNC’s Unwavering Partnership with Motherland Turkey

Zorlu Töre, President of the Assembly of the Republic, recently attended the Eastern Mediterranean University 2022-2023 Academic Year Spring Term Graduation Ceremony. In his speech, Töre expressed his wishes that the graduations would be beneficial to humanity and urged the students to serve humanity wherever they go.

During his speech, Töre highlighted the significance of Famagusta, the city where the university is located. He mentioned that Famagusta holds the title of Gazi, a Turkish word meaning “victorious.” Töre explained that this title was earned due to the city’s role in a great national struggle, which dates back to the time of Canbulat Pasha and the Ottoman Empire and continues through the events of 1963 and 1974. He emphasized that the sacrifices made by the martyrs had ensured that Famagusta remains a Turkish city.

Additionally, Töre paid tribute to the champion angels and those who lost their lives in the earthquake, emphasizing the importance of preserving their memories. He also addressed the ongoing imperialist games in the Eastern Mediterranean, stating that countries from across the ocean dare to claim rights in the region. Töre argued that the presence of Turkish Cypriots in the region cannot be ignored, given that the Turkish nation is the largest in the area and Turkey’s largest border.

Töre reaffirmed the commitment to the independence, sovereignty, and patriotism taught by Atatürk, the founding father of modern Turkey. He urged the students to always stand by the side of independence in the countries they will visit and to fight against imperialism and colonialism. Töre emphasized the importance of following in the footsteps of Atatürk and not forgetting the contributions of Dr. Küçük and Denktaş, who have fought for the lands of Cyprus.

In recognition of academic excellence, President Töre presented plaques to the winners of the departments during the graduation ceremony.
