Cutting Team Warns of Strike Over Foreign Citrus Workers

The Citrus Cutting Teams Association has raised concerns about the potential exploitation of workers in the country. Despite there being no labor shortage, some groups are allegedly attempting to profit by bringing in workers under false pretenses.

According to the association, the harvest has been progressing slowly due to greening disease, leading to 10 teams and 250 workers being idle and returning to Turkey. This slow progress has also resulted in sluggish exports, further indicating that there is no shortage of labor.

Cypfruvex Ltd. has come under fire for allegedly planning to bring in nearly 400 workers from third countries, despite the lack of necessity. The association has warned that if these workers are brought in, they will go on strike and the slaughter will be indefinitely stopped.

The statement emphasized that there is no issue with the harvest and that union members are willing to bring in necessary workers if needed. It was also noted that a majority of workers brought in from third countries end up crossing illegally to the south.

Bringing in additional workers unnecessarily not only threatens the livelihood of local slaughter teams but also has the potential to cause chaos in the region. The association is urging for a reconsideration of the decision to bring in workers under false pretenses.
